Travel Mates isn’t just a company—it’s a promise of understanding, compassion, and endless exploration.
You might be wondering: Why focus on travel logistics for disabled travelers and their companions?
It all started with a phone call I’ll never forget. While working and living in Sydney, Australia, I received a call no child ever wants to get in the middle of the night—my Dad had suffered a debilitating stroke. Without hesitation, I packed my bags and booked a one-way flight home to New Jersey.
My Dad has always been my biggest supporter, so the thought of losing him was unimaginable. Thankfully, he survived. But his life—and ours—changed forever. He was left with right-side paralysis, aphasia, and became wheelchair dependent. The road to recovery has been long, but the strength of our family and friends helped us adapt to our new reality.
At first, we thought our traveling days were over. The fear and uncertainty were paralyzing. But I was determined to help my parents continue living fully—and that included traveling. I rolled up my sleeves and dug into to the process. It took hours of meticulous research, countless phone calls to airlines, hotels, restaurants, attractions, car rental agencies, and countless questions just to plan a single trip to Sanibel, Florida. Thing we used to take for granted while traveling came to light. What are the procedures at the airport, especially with the TSA security lines? How will we transfer my Dad from his wheelchair to the plane seat? Are there ramps at the hotel? Does the hotel have a roll-in shower? What is the bed height?
That experience opened my eyes to a major gap in the travel industry: a lack of accessible, inclusive, and centralized travel resources for disabled travelers. It shouldn’t be this hard. Every person deserves to travel with ease, dignity, and joy. Everyone should have the chance to experience new places, cultures, and cuisines—without facing unnecessary obstacles.
That’s why I created Travel Mates—a one-stop shop for accessible travel planning, tailored support, and shared adventure. I’m here to share what I’ve learned (and continue to learn) with a wider audience, to empower more families like mine to explore the world with confidence. Let’s bring respect, dignity, and possibility back to travel—together.
